It was 93 one day this past week - and while I am certainly not wanting to wish away time, I have had it with this hot, humid, muggy, awful summer weather. To paraphrase a movie title: it’s been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad summer!
A photo taken at 7:00 AM - doesn’t the morning just look like it’s going to be a scorcher? (No filters, I promise.)
While I sat in the milkhouse yesterday, waiting for customers, I tried to keep the baked goods looking as fresh as possible with the door open and fans blowing air…warm air, but still air was moving.
I brought in a few flowers hoping they would make the surroundings a bit cheerier as I slowly melted in my rocking chair.
A quick trip to the farmers’ market and I found some of the best, sweetest, absolutely perfect in every way corn. They had it packed in ice, which I thought was a terrific idea! Here's my secret to cooking what I think is perfect corn every time, and it's quick & easy. Let water come to a boil in a stockpot, add ears of cleaned corn, when the water returns to a boil: turn off the heat, cover the stockpot, and wait 5 minutes. (Slather with butter, salt & pepper...but that's just how I like it!)

and my giant cupboard is ready to pick up! I can’t wait to get her here - I’m thankful to the gal who found her in a dusty corner and saw she needed some TLC. And for her to have some old hinges and a keyhole cover from this old house makes my heart happy. An antique knob was added as well - now - to make the trip and carefully load her, bring her home, up 4 steps, and finally through the double doors - fingers crossed!
Sending you good wishes for the rest of the weekend, and for the week to come - may it be cooler!
Oh, Mary! That table is lovely. I'm not surprised you were happy to rescue it. And I'd be more than happy to 'rescue' some of your lemon cake if I lived nearby :)
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying the summer. Although I think I'd also be looking forward to autumn if we were experiencing those high temperatures. Here's hoping it cools down for you very soon. Xx
Jules, it would be a joy to spend an afternoon chatting with you over a lemon loaf! And you have so many wonderful summer adventures, I can understand you wanting it to linger. Fall will come and then winter and you’ll probably hear me complain it’s so cold! But then, maybe not, it’s been absolutely wicked here!
DeleteYou scored on the table. Great for displays too. Ugh on the heat wave. I am so over with the 90 degree temps here too and wishing for a cool down. My air conditioning bill is once again going to be high. Every time they say rain we hardly get any or none comes. Janice
ReplyDeleteOne man’s trash as they say - free - yay! Oh, we could definitely use rain, the grass is starting to die back and flowers and gardens need watering daily. Sorry, I’m just never happy am I?! I need it to be 65 to 70 during the day-that’s my cut off!
DeleteOh...my. That first photo certainly exudes heat. Sorry for your heat. We had a few near 90º days last week but had a storm come through Friday night/yesterday that brought almost an inch of rain and much cooler temps. Another storm is coming in early in the morning hours tomorrow. Your table find is wonderful! Did you have to replace a couple of legs? Enamel-top tables just sing vintage farmhouse to me - so perfect for your milkhouse venture. I remember the Gooseberry Patch books but never owned one for some reason. It's odd because I have a hard time resisting cookbooks - even now when it's just cooking for me. Those M&M's are a hoot! (Great color combination!) You should write the company...maybe it was some special promotion. I know they did something several years back where they put one unusually colored candy in a package and if you were lucky enough to get it, you won some fantastic prize. (Or did I just dream all this?? LOL. These days, it's getting more difficult to separate reality from dreams...maybe that just means I'm living my dream??) ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi there Robin, no I know the picture does look like it needs new legs. That’s how it was laying in the gal’s front yard. The legs were off and we quickly slid it in the car and when I got home they secured easily, And you’re thinking just like me-I said to my daughter, you know, did we miss some special promotion? Is there $1 million bag we’re supposed to be looking for and
Deletefound it (Can you say Nomad?!?)
I love drinking in all of the beauty your photographs bring. You have an eye.
ReplyDeleteMy heart stopped when I read about the enamelware table. I adore enamelware and in fact, just picked up a piece last week as a birthday gift to myself! It stands the test of time and make great storage containers for closets and under cabinets. Enjoy your new treasure!
Hope you are in for a cool down. I promise you, autumn is coming!
Aww thank you Daisy for the kind words - I’m sure I drive people crazy with a “quick pull over!” sometimes when we’re out and about - But if I don’t capture it, something like a sunset or sunrise, the light changes and it’s gone in a minute. I do love enamelware, I like the blue swirl buckets mostly and honestly, I just recently started loving these tables - Quick and easy to clean and timeless. You’ll have to share your bday gift to you on your blog - Would love to see it!
DeleteYou sound just like me. It has been so hot this summer and dry so dry. I hate to wish it away because winter is long. We had a big cool off overnight it has felt so good today.
ReplyDeleteI have two enamel tables on my porch and I adore them so good find.
Cathy
Oh Cathy I agree - I hate to wish away the days, but honestly, they are just so miserable. And your porch is amazing, I’ll have to flip back to some pictures and try to zoom in on those tables!
DeleteEnjoy your new treasures! Our weather has been the same, but we are enjoying a SPECTACULAR week this week. I hope that you are as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Staci - so hard to get anything done when it’s this hot, but love knowing that you’re having a spectacular weather week, I know you’re busy busy!
