stopping in for a quick visit...

A short hello on this hot, humid, summertime day, time feels short,
for this week is, gulp:

COLLEGE ORIENTATION!

Today was the first day - my son and I headed out early, but by 10 AM they had parents and students in separate lectures, so I didn't see him all day. Now he's spending the night to experience the dorms with his bio-chemistry friends-to-be. Don't get me started...why yes, I was tearing up standing in the registration line.

With that said, I'll be taking off throwback Thursday this week, but wanted to leave you with a few snapshots of what you'd see if you stopped by for a visit...

blue larkspur drying
on the cupboard door,

evidence of much-needed rain!

do you see the
baby birds way in the back?

a visit to a local antique store;
I loved so many things!

friendly, local bookends!

And this I share because everyone needs a good laugh!

When I renewed my driver's license recently, I answered the usual questions:

1 - would you please step up for an eye exam?
2 - do you have proof of legal name?
3-  do you want to be an organ donor?
4-  can I have your height and weight?

and lastly...are you ready?

5-  are you going to continue to color your hair brown?

Do you see my expression?

Do you see my head tilting slightly as if I misunderstood?

Do you see my eyes narrowing as I begin to be insulted?

Do you hear the way I answer,
dragging
out
every
 word...

I DON'T COLOR MY HAIR

Exhibit 1 - 2019

Exhibit 2 - 2022

Now friends, I never tell my age, but I have a 21-year old daughter and an 18-year old son, so you can make an approximate guess.

When I was growing up I remember my mom coloring her hair: oh, the mess, the drips, the stained towels, and I said I would never do it. I consider myself pretty lucky (I see gray, and trust me, I've earned every one of them) but it could be so much grayer. Now underneath, it is a lovely shade of dark brown...sigh, if only that were on top!

Anyway, the licence registrar looked at me as if she didn't believe me...a short stare-down ensued, and then we moved on.

So there friends, is your giggle for the day...you just never know what question may come your way!

  1. Ok. First of all, I LOVE your hair!!! LOVE! And secondly, So glad you had a good visit to the college. It is so hard letting those kids grow, isn't it? Have a good evening.

  2. Well done for surviving the first day of orientation! Your son is spreading his wings.
As for the question about your hair, for once I'm quite speechless. I think it looks lovely, by the way. Xx

  3. Oh My Stars. The nerve! Your hair is gorgeous as is.

Congrats on your baby moving forward with his dreams. These things can be hard on a momma, but it shows we're doing our job!
    Blessings...

  4. Billie Jo - Awww, thanks for your sweet words. I can see it's not as dark as it was a few years ago, but ugh...that's not a question required to renew a driver's license here.

And you're absolutely right, sooo hard letting them go...I feel somewhat lost. Sigh

Jules, thank you, survival mode was definitely on! Walking around campus took me back, but still - where do the years go?

And thank you for the compliment - her question just took me by surprise. Obviously there's gray showing...maybe she thought I needed another brand of hair color that worked better! ;)

Daisy g - you're so kind, thanks! What is it we've heard since we were little, "Just because you think it, doesn't mean you have to say it." ha, ha!

  5. Thanks for the giggle. When I started getting a bit gray I will never forget this young girl at the cash register asking me if I wanted the senior discount. I knew you needed to be 60 to get it, and was put off that she thought I was 60 when I was only 45. Oh well. Pretty Larkspur! I would have cried too if my kids went away to college. So glad they went close y. Janice

  6. Daisy g - I forgot to say you're right, it is so hard...this mama is a mess. I know I have 100 things to do to keep me busy, but I just can't imagine not hearing his infectious laughter every day. Thank goodness for texting...and yes, they do deserve to chase their own dreams.

  7. Jance, you're story made me smile, thanks! I think the kids are grateful they take after my side so far hair-wise...hubby's family begins turning gray early, he was starting to turn just out of high school! So we've been there...I remember someone asking me how our marriage worked with such a big difference in our ages...I just said, he's only 2 years older than me...awkward silence!

College is only an hour away, so not far, but still, I am about to be a wreck! Big city and I feel like there's so much to worry about. Sigh...

  8. Such sweet photos. Congrats on making it through your sons' registration. I can imagine how incredibly difficult that is. I'm sure he's very excited.

I have to tell you that I was shocked when I read about the question of your hair color. I can't believe that was asked! BTW your hair is absolutely beautiful (natural color and cut).

I get the opposite. (Although thankfully, not at the DMV) I've been fully gray since my mid-30's (thanks to my mom for the genes...) and I finally let it grow out in 2019. So now, when someone hasn't seen me in a while, they either don't care at all about my hair, or others try not to look at me, while others stare disapprovingly at my hair, or some have asked "why in the world would you let your hair go gray????" We live in such a world of instagram perfect expectations....

Have a wonderful weekend and take some time for yourself!

  9. You are beautiful...

    She was horribly intrusive.

When did this become a *question*, at Motor Vehicle?

Had a similar-but-different experience recently and wonder, what is going on with the world, that people think they can demand many answers from us???? It's definitely time, to question back.

  10. Staci, yep, giving weight is bad enough! I'm not sure of her intentions...she didn't say it was a new, required question. Gosh, I guess I can see if it if I'm unable to speak for myself and there's some question about my identity in an accident?? Anyway, thanks for your sweet compliments - I can see in a few years there are more gray hairs (college bound kids perhaps?!)

And I absolutely agree...some photos have filtered away anything less than perfection. And how rude for someone to say that to you...I'm so sorry to hear that...it's hurtful and truly, what does it matter to them? I would love to have heard your reply!

I'm about to put my feet up and enjoy a British mystery! Ahhh
Thanks again for your kind words - appreciate you!

  11. Beside a babbling brook...you are so kind! Thank you...and yes, why do people always feel the need to say what they're thinking...NOT necessary. It's too bad that the bar is so low for "common" courtesy - saying thank you, opening a door, being a gentleman and being a lady. And, to be blunt, minding your own business! I remember many years ago someone asking me why I didn't have children yet...stunning.

Wishing you a good evening! Mary

  12. Dar Mary, thank you so much for leaving a comment on my blog. So very happy to have made your Blogging acquaintance.

We are in mid NYS, about half way, as the crow flies, between NYC to the south and Montreal to the north. Near the foot hills of the Adirondack Mountains. Far, far away from NYC! -shuddddder-

We have 4 distinct seasons, and we are now in summer. -smile- I prefer to look on heat, this way. Because I do love having all 4 seasons, even with the ice/snow of winter. -smile-

    Gentle hugs,

  13. Age is so difficult to guess these days. People eighty look sixty - and some even act that way.

  14. Beside a babbling brook, then you're weather is much like ours in the Midwest right now; hot & humid! And I couldn't agree more, I'm not a city girl - I need the peace & quiet of country roads, fields, farm animals, and room to explore. Fall is my favorite season, not too hot; not too cold! But then settling into winter and resting up from the busyness of spring/summer is a blessing as well - getting snowed in is just fine by me. Thanks again for stopping by!

  15. David,
So true...those blessed with "good genes" can look years younger than they are. While I'm trying to do the things I should, it's all the toss of a coin! Thanks for stopping to visit, Mary

  17. Chrissy,

Awww, thank you so much, it was such an odd thing to ask. But you know, I'm learning more and more that some people just say what's on their minds - no filter. Oh well...it's been fun to read other bloggers responses! So glad you stopped by, I'll visit your blog as well! Mary
