Brrr!

Like so much of the country, the farm is in the middle of winter’s grasp. While there’s only 4 inches of snow on the ground, the temperatures are single digits at night and when paired with the wind gusts, and hail, it’s been brutal.

The power has been off twice today, so a fire is going and I just heated some water - I’d really like a small cast iron kettle made when the house was built, so the search is on (Janice, I’ll be looking for that gate mark on the bottom to make sure it’s truly old!)

I then filled a good, old-fashioned water bottle with the hot water…some things never go out of style. And it’s heart-shaped to boot, so that makes me smile!

Today’s plan is to sort through oodles of papers, catch up on scrap-booking, and make some sourdough bread. Someone shared their recipe, and it was really good, but it takes 24 hours start-to-finish so I better get moving.

Oh, and these bread loaves sell for $18 each at the farmers market.

Yes, $18! I can appreciate the work that goes into a loaf, but that seems a little steep to me - yikes! (OK, honestly, more than a little steep…this is a small town, not New York City.) And while I’m looking for new recipes to sell from the milk house, I just can’t see selling it anywhere near that price.

Drumroll please - today’s question for you:

What does the average-size round loaf of sourdough sell for in your area?

Ok- off my soapbox!

I hope wherever you find yourself you’re cozy, warm, comfortable, and enjoying February doing something that makes you happy!

  1. Such lovely photos - and such wonderful images your words conjure. We've been bitter cold here as well. Windchills of -25+ but they say we will be warming up soon to highs in the double digits. As for the sourdough....yikes, that is a dear price. Around here, I think the going price is about $10. ~Robin~

    1. Oh Robin, that is bitter cold – I have no room to complain. I hope your furnace repairs are holding up and that you’re cozy and curled up. I agree – $10 seems fair if it’s a good size loaf. And really I think most of that 24 hours will be hands off – still so surprised people are willing to pay $18. I need to find that crowd to come to the milkhouse!

  2. Egads! I can't even imagine surviving cold temps like y'all are talking about. We have the fireplace going if it gets in the low 30's. Y'all are some hearty folks!
I think handmade bread around here (Piedmont, NC) goes for about $8-$9, but the last time I bought sourdough Einkorn bread, it was closer to $12, if I remember right.
Hope you find your period kettle. The fun is in the hunting!
    Blessings...

    1. That’s so true Daisy – part of the fun is the chase and the anticipation! Boy, our temperatures are nothing like what Robin is having-and then another gal in New England said she has 3 feet of snow - unbelievable! I don’t mind the snow, I just mind the single digits paired with the wind – I’m just not sure a lathe and plaster house has any insulation! Thanks for the scoop on bread prices down your way.

  3. If you have a soapstone with a bale holder on it, You can also put that near your fire and then using a hot pad put it under your blankets to make them warm. My mom and gramma use to do that for us just before we went to bed in the old farmhouse which had no heat. Janice

    1. I love that you have those sweet memories – I think you should jot all of those down, they would make a wonderful book! Add some handed down recipes. Some photos - it would be a beautiful book of remembrance for your family.

  4. It sounds like you're filling these cold winter days with the perfect activities to see you through. Lily and I are also hot water bottle enthusiasts, since we used some during our stay at Skiddaw House, last year.
I'm not sure about the price of sourdough. But my loaf in the freezer is almost finished, so I'll make it my mission to check :)

    1. I do love the snow, I really do – and I love the quiet time before the endless work of spring and summer begin. I just don’t like single digits and strong winds together. I just have to remember it could be so much worse. And once again, you inspired me – there’s a 5K coming up in April – thank goodness there’s a Walking option😊 I think I’ll give it a try - the proceeds go to planting trees – and that’s always a good thing!
