things that make my heart happy…

Lately I’m spending the few remaining warm and sunny days we have cleaning out a little barn-and no, that doesn’t particularly make my heart happy, but some things are a necessary evil, sigh.

What did make my heart happy (at the end of a dusty and dirty day) was this sight..

And while it was a storm to the north, the contrast in colors was absolutely stunning.

What also made my heart happy with stumbling upon oodles of what surely must be vintage bead board - again, dusty and dirty is the theme for the day, but it set my heart a flutter!

I know I know, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but my mind was whirling. I want to redo the kitchen in an unfitted style-I can just see bead board on the walls and ceiling (be still my heart) and while there isn’t nearly enough for that, maybe just a special wall, or maybe the ceiling, or maybe having a cupboard built with some of it. I’ve tried to work with the kitchen, trust me, it must be out of the 70s. There’s only so much paint can do.

Then I found this in the barn, thinking it might be a cake pan until I turned it and found ??? on the side. Maybe not a cake pan, but a skillet - perhaps that’s where the handle was attached? Does anyone have thoughts on what it might be? Love the green gingham pattern!

And lastly, I’ll leave you with a giggle-another little drive with my daughter (because yes, sometimes you have to drive 30 miles when you’re craving Raising Cane’s chicken!)

You know how I feel about Barn-heart:

an oh-so pretty butter-colored barn,

a barn celebrating Johnny Appleseed,

and, here’s the giggle - forgive me - whatever this is supposed to be!

Good grief, we came over a hill and it was quite startling! I did a little homework on the image and evidently it’s related to the group The Grateful Dead-sorry, not my vibe.

Again, my apologies, but after this, I was glad to see a little sunset “palate cleanser” to end my day.

To each their own as the saying goes!

  1. LOL on the last photo.... Hmmm, I'd have been hard pressed to figure that one out myself. Love that butter-colored barn!! It seems almost every barn here is red (or weathered gray from lack of maintenance). I'm always on the lookout for ones that aren't. But the real showstoppers of this post are your first three photos. Those dark angry skies are absolutely show stopping backdrops for those beautiful autumnal colors in the foreground. Something out of a dream. The pan is a puzzle...still looks like an easy release type cake pan to me....perhaps it broke and this was a make-do repair to make it at least useable as a pan?? LOVE the beadboard!!!! Can't wait to see what you do with it!!

    1. Thanks for all the kind words, Robin. Angry is the perfect description! Jan solved the pan mystery - something tells me it became a dog/cat water or feed bowl perhaps. Barn upkeep is so expensive - it’s time to paint here and everyone keeps telling me to tear down the little one the beadboard was hiding in. Yes it needs TLC (a lot) but it just “speaks” to me - I won’t do it. Grrrrr

  2. It is simply glorious when the sun hits autumn leaves like this. Xx

  3. Hmmm, what a mystery that "pan" is. I wonder if your local antique dealer could shed some light on that.
The landscapes are amazing! And I love me some barns, no matter the artwork.
It looks like autumn has settled in well there. Enjoy this beautiful season.

    1. Oh I do love barns, too - something draws me in - history I suppose. And I think Jan solved the pan mystery - looks like a match to the eBay one. Hope all’s going well down south!

  4. Hello! Your autumn images are stunning, my friend. I am no help to you as far as the beautiful pan, or the slightly frightening image on the barn, but I am here to tell you I love peeking into your amazing world. And...can you believe...I've never had Raising Canes???? My family loves it though! Happy November!

    1. Oh you need to visit Raising Canes! I’m picky about my coleslaw so theirs isn’t my favorite but oh the crispy chicken and sauce - a winner! And I agree - coming over a hill to see that bear was, well, yes-frightening, surprising, unexpected!

  5. I think I found one on Ebay. It looks like an aluminum skillet made by Chilton.

    1. Mystery solved - thank you Jan! I’m always curious about the history behind things I discover. You did some clever and quick detective work - thanks again!

  6. Your find looked like a skillet minus its handle but I do not know the maker. Barns around here use to have the last name of the farmer spelled out in the shingles of the roof which was pretty cool. Some have barn quilt paintings or just red or dilapidated. The first photos were just stunning, especially with the storm in the background. We are getting soon Sunday. Ugh Oh well. Tis the season coming for us now. Janice

    1. And so it was - amazing what’s tossed in the corners of an old barn. I’ve only seen one barn with the build date marked on its slate roof - the farmer’s name would be wonderful to see. And the painted quilts are on a few barns here as well - what talent the artists have.

  7. The bead board what a find. I do love Barns, and it makes me sad to see them in sad falling down shape.

    1. I’m so grateful the bead board was saved - I’m wondering where it was. There’s a half beadboard wall in one room (stained). I’m just so grateful someone didn’t burn it!
