the sweet and simple things…

This last week flew by, and while both kids were home, the days were filled with simple things…just for fun things. Here’s a quick peek at what we did:

A quick day-trip to (so they say)The World’s Only Mothman Museum - who is Mothman? A legendary creature with wings and glowing red eyes - probably hanging out with Big Foot, Chupacabra, and the Loch Ness Monster! 

The museum was in a sweet little Mayberry-like  town…

with a great antique shop - the most Fiestaware I’ve seen in one place!

I’m searching high and low for a new cupboard to hold scrapbooks (oh-so many scrapbooks) - this one’s caught my eye. Needs a little love, but a good price. Maybe…a little sanding out of the rough spots and a new coat of paint?? I’m still thinking it over. 

Here’s one I fell in love with, found a picture online, saying it came from an 1867 barn - swoon!  It listed a town but no other contact information, so now I’m doing some sleuthing, hoping I can narrow down where it might be-ugh, chances are slim. 

Friday my daughter had a terrific idea - we should celebrate the summer solstice! 

IKEA always has a big celebration and somehow, each year we seem to miss it - so we decided to have our own Swedish Firande! We hopped in the car and headed to the nearest IKEA - if you’ve not eaten in an IKEA restaurant, the meatballs are legendary. And as silly as that may sound, I say it with all seriousness. So we wandered through the little food section of IKEA and brought home goodies for our dinner. I found some Swedish folk music to play in the background and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! 

The evening light was perfectly gorgeous on the longest day of the year - this was taken at 9 PM.

There’s something magical about the summer solstice…dancing fireflies, golden light, such vivid colors. A simple joy on a beautifully long day. 

 

I know for many of us extremely high temperatures are coming this week; take care of yourselves, keep as cool as possible, and stay safe. Catch up with you soon. 

  

not enough hours in the day!

How can it be the middle of June? As the saying goes, “Back the truck up!” Let’s reverse the calendar a little bit shall we? The days are flying by.

I just finished getting the garden in (a month later than usual-we’ve had so much rain). I’m cleaning out the milkhouse for summer cottage food sales, wrangling weeds, and staring down a long to-do list.  

Just like all of your days, don't we seem to find they're filled from beginning to end? But I'm reminded of this quote by one of my favorite authors/artists, Susan Branch:

"Sometimes I think we get caught up in the hectic happenings of the weeks and months and we forget to take time out to relax."

She's spot on...sure, there are important things that need doing, but it's also so important to slow down. We need to take time to unwind, relax, and enjoy these days.

And with that said, here's a look at some of the things I've spied with my little eyes as I tried to take time to slow down…

  The Master Weaver was wonderful!  I was her only student for the day,
so it was perfect for me as a beginner - I’ll definitely be doing this again. 

So pretty, a balloon festival in a town not far away.

she visits every spring and is always so polite. 

Peonies are blooming,

along with this finicky rose. Some years it’s covered in blooms,
then other years absolutely nothing. Can anyone tell me what variety it
might be and any tips for growing?

A friend shared her fresh milk with me,
and I tried my hand at making yogurt!

And this crock caught my eye - I never see one with a lid.  
I wonder if it needs a new home?! (It didn’t have a price tag,
so I’m guessing it's out of my price range,
but I'll check next time I'm there.)

Well, that’s it for today. My son will be here tonight as he’s off this week from his college job - perfect timing because my daughter leaves Saturday for 6 weeks as an RA at a ballet company. I’m thinking maybe we squeeze in a day trip and lots of home cooking!
