October has come to the country and I am filled with autumn busyness! Ahhh, the days are finally cooler. The passing summer has been extremely hot & humid in our part of the Midwest, and I admit, I'm not sorry to see it pass. Chores that were hard to accomplish in the muggy days of summer seem easier to tackle now. I'm washing quilts, sweeping porches, and shaking rugs. On the to-do list is making grape jam, salsa, and pasta sauce, along with harvesting sweet potatoes. We'll clean out the chicken coop and compost bin, toss the contents into the garden, and put it to bed until spring. Farmers' markets are still busy and filled with pumpkins, acorn and butternut squash, okra, cabbage, and gourds. And since Halloween isn't far away, it's time to bring home several plump pumpkins!
October is my favorite month...a time of full moons and richly colored mums, of cider and woodsmoke, glorious trees, and of crisp days and cool nights. I love the brisk weather, and the daytime light feels somehow different...it is clear and bright, signaling an end to summer. To me, it's a month like no other! It's said, "life is a series of memories"...with that in mind, let's take the time to recall happy ones shared, and make new ones along the way.
Thanks, Christine...there's so many different types of pumpkins (Cinderella?!) that it's hard to choose. I even love the ooey, gooeyness of cleaning out pumpkins then roasting the seeds! It all passes too quickly for me.

the laughter of children
cross-country train rides
barn sales & auctions

I cannot conceivably influence the world's destiny, but I can make my own life more worthwhile.
I can give some help to some people, that is not vital to all the world's problems, and yet I think if everyone did just that, we might see quite a different world in our time!"
-Gladys Taber
"It is not the things you have that make you happy.
It is love, and kindness, and helping each other, and just plain being good. "
-Laura Ingalls Wilder
"The ordinary arts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest."
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover."
-Mark Twain
"In all of living, have much fun and laughter.
Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured."
-Gordon B. Hinckley
"Life is short,
and it's up to you to make it sweet."
-Sadie Delany
"The real things haven't changed...
It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong."
-Laura Ingalls Wilder
"Love is the thing that enables a woman to sing while she mops up the floor after her husband has walked across it in his barn boots."
October does offer so much in the way of pleasantness and simple joys of nature!
