oh that weather!

The last week has been a weather whirlwind. So many of you are buried under snow, watching ice melt and then flood your homes, or cleaning up debris from gale-force winds.

As March came in like a lamb (at least here,) I do believe the old saying is true - she will go out like a lion. The temperatures here have ranged from a balmy 70 - so nice the windows were open, to a frosty 15 last night with a fire going throughout the day.

In our part of the Midwest we’ve had winds so strong that what was once this:

is now this:

And while some barn roofing flew into neighboring fields and tarps surrounding the chicken run were found rolling across the yard, all-in-all, we’ve been lucky. The power stayed on and the old maple trees held fast…always a concern for me.

Sending thoughts across the miles to all of you who are shoveling out, mopping up, and digging in to clean rubble and waste. I hope you find many helping hands to make the work lighter.

  1. So nice to see spring flowers. Sorry the winds were so brutal and happy the trees held fast.

    1. Oh they’re frozen today - but still lovely - and I’ll be complaining about the heat before we know it!

  3. High winds ruined our door trellis too a few years ago. So sorry to see it ruined yours too now. I wish Spring would come soon. We had flurries again and back in the 30's. Janice

    1. It’s amazing to me the power the wind has - we passed a huge evergreen tree today that had been blown over, roots and all. Well I’m out of doors rescued from the barn, I’ll have to think of a new trellis idea – maybe one a little more windproof!

  4. Yikes! And what a shame about that lovely bench. I hope that the weather has calmed down now. Xx

    1. Hi Jules- much calmer now and it looks to stay that way. But we never know-we had a white-out a couple of days ago. It came on suddenly while driving, and it was impossible to see the road or even know if we were staying on it, but every car was afraid to stop moving forward for fear they’d be stranded. What a season!

  5. Sorry about your door trellis. It was cute! We had/have 30" snow. They are calling it Snowmaggedon.

    1. Wow that is a lot of snow - hope you’re doing well and keeping warm! Yes I’ll have to think up another arbor idea - I’m out of doors!

  7. Oh Mary! I'm sorry about your beautiful trellis. Yes...the wind can be so wicked. It always puts me on edge when it flexes its muscles (and it has some pretty stunning muscles). Yes, as you know, I've been through the gamut - snow, bitter, bitter, cold, warming temps, melting ice, heart-breaking flooding, 30+" of snow this past weekend (plus 13" a few days prior), being completely stranded until yesterday, and now melting again...and the worry of flooding...again...all in a few weeks. But I'm trying (sometimes not very successfully) to remind myself that there are others who have suffered so much more and, in many ways, I've been fortunate - even in the adversities.

  8. I need a clever idea for a new arbor. Ugh-I probably should have kept them for something else -feeling badly that they were out in the rain/snow which wasn’t good for the old wood. I can’t imagine all of your snow - the melting, refreezing, then more snow seems like it would be devastating - good heavens sometimes a hard cry is what’s needed. A breakdown to break through. Hang on!
