National Simplicity Day…July 12

Honoring naturalist, philosopher, arborist, and author, Henry David Thoreau, Born July 12, 1817.

Best known for his book Walden, a reflection on simple living, he spent two years in a small cabin he built near Walden Pond in Massachusetts.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Let’s take time Sunday to live simply…whatever that means for you. Maybe it’s a walk, maybe it’s sitting on the porch, maybe it’s a simple dinner with food from your own garden, or maybe it’s an old-fashioned Sunday drive.

Whatever it is, let’s slow down and do something that makes our hearts happy, while taking in the beauty to be found right outside our own back doors.

  1. Every day here is simplicity day. I have cut way back on outside responsibilities to focus on what really matters. Blessings...

  2. Daisy, I love that - EVERY day - as it should be. (Sounds like a good post to me - any tips on how to keep that perspective?). Have a good day and thanks for your example!

  3. I watered the garden and spent the bulk of my day on the porch.
I read a book about his life a very interesting time.

    1. Sounds perfect Cathy. I found Walden online for free and plan to read it. I hope it’s a bit cooler your way!

  4. As always, such beautiful photos! That last one is stunning. Personally, I think something has gone terribly awry if we need to HAVE a "Simplicity Day." But that may just be me getting old and cantankerous. ;-) Simplicity can be so very complicated at times. I find watching my little grand make grand play out of a stone and a bit of air and marvel how far I've drifted from simplicity.

    1. Oh I agree - I think most of us are fighting for that simplicity in a messy, noisy, often rude world (relevant post coming soon!) Maybe it’s a calendar day set aside to encourage those who haven’t taken the leap yet. And pleasures such as watching your granddaughter play with the simplest of things may just be what we need to remind us. I know I need that nudge!

  5. I have cut-back and simplified in so many ways. Life is complicated enough. Xx

    1. Good - as it should be! Less cluttered, less packed hours in the day and in the week. You’ve done it without a day set aside to remind us to do so!
