time flies..

How can it be almost April? It never ceases to amaze me that before I know it, it’s already the weekend.

This past week was a week of simple pleasures - doing my best to enjoy (as Gandalf/Tolkien would say) “…the time that is given us”

A birthday for me,

and remembering just how fun it is skipping rocks with my daughter at the lake - she was the champion!

Cold and breezy, we were wearing our winter coats, but it was such a fun morning…accidentally captured our shadows while taking pictures!

Then, when the temperatures swing from 19 to 77 in March, it’s never a good sign. One day, it was a blinding snowstorm, the next, windows were open to let in the warm breezes. And sure enough, that drastic temperature change means:

And so off to the basement we went - pillows, blankets, important papers, and of course Bailey, who was not budging and quite literally had to be carried downstairs. We were only tucked in about an hour, and while all is well, we laughed sitting there, looking around wondering just how safe a 162 year-old basement actually is in a house supported by tree trunks!

Yesterday there was time for a little Easter decorating,

lighting a lilac candle - my favorite fragrance,

and thinking of Spring.

Then, after a little evening drive, we saw this:

 Amazing.

So that’s a peek at our week - and here we go again, a fresh new start is at our doorsteps just waiting for us - time to make “every day” days special, and special days nothing short of extraordinary!

  1. Happy birthday and so glad your safe and sound. I haven't skipped stones since I was a kid.
That house has gone through many years of weather I bet it is still sound.

    1. Thank you Cathy for the good wishes, and you know, it must take a young soul to think of skipping stones. It hadn’t even crossed my mind - but it was fun! And you’re right, the old house has seen a lot of weather, she does need a little TLC in spots though, hoping to give that to her when the weather warms up. :)

  2. That church pic was stunning! Love your bunny displays and adding those seed packets to that measuring cup was also a great idea. YIKES on the tornado warning. Many a days I gathered up pillows and blankets, kiddos and dog and headed downstairs ourselves. We have no basement at this house and I always worry now when bad weather approaches. Glad you were safe. Janice

    1. Hi Janice-the work countdown is on for you! Thanks -the skies were so pretty that evening and I was just in the right spot at the right time. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a tornado warning, when it’s a watch I start getting ready!

  3. Happy Birthday for as long as you like celebrating another trip around the sun! From where I sit, you have 16 candles, although your wisdom is that of someone much more advanced! ;0D
Glad you have a basement in which to shelter. Spring is on its way to you, dear friend! Skipping stones, blowing dandelion seeds aflutter, and bare feet in the green grass are all ways I stay connected to my younger spirit. Enjoy this gift of a day.

    1. Ha - maybe a trip back to 16 and make some changes wouldn’t hurt?! I appreciate my daughter not putting all the candles on - fire hazard!! You’re doing it right Daisy - young at heart - oh can I add flying kites to the list? I love that even still!

  4. Happy Birthday. As I read about the tree roots holding up the basement/house, I had to chuckle. I can relate! We have an old farmhouse too. The trees in the front are well over 100 year old maples. Every time we have a storm, I pray "don't let those trees fall on our house." They would take us out. But, they are probably, part of what is holding up the old rock foundation to the house on that side. People have said "just cut them down." They also shade the house so it stays cooler. O.k. my little share. Have a good week.

    1. Thanks for the good wishes! If you have time go back to my post from August 2024 titled summertime in the country- there’s a picture of the tree trunks IN the basement! They literally hold up the house. There are other metal supports that have been added in later years but it’s always amazing to me (and kind of scary) And I’m right there with you - praying the trees hold tight when the string winds come :/

  5. Belated Birthday wishes, Mary!
Oh, I love your photographs. And I can imagine you stood there by the lake shore, skimming stones. I'm not very good at it either :)

  6. Thank you, Jules (and yes, I’m more than the 16 candles on the cake!) and you’re too kind, your photography is always stunning. I need to be younger at heart. It wouldn’t even have dawned on me to skip stones…lesson learned!

  7. Happy and Blessed Birthday, my dear friend! We would be best good friends/neighbors if we lived near each other, you know? Have a cozy afternoon. Love your beautiful photos, too.

    1. I have often thought that-of course, with my hermit tendencies, we might just have to do a lot of texting if we were neighbors! No surprise drop in visits, I promise:) It would be fun, and I so appreciate the inspiration you give me for keeping family close, so grateful for that.

  8. Happiest belated birthday wishes! We are close in birth dates...at least month and day wise. Mine was just another day so sometimes I forget to add that extra number to my age. I'm glad you were safe through the tornado watch. During tornado season, we have so many watches and warnings that I rarely actually go into the basement. We only had a bare root cellar at the farm growing up and the only entrance was from outside so it wasn't something we did even though we had two tornados actually go through our property. And while you arre having tornado watches, we are under yet another winter storm watch. Ugh.

    1. Another winter storm? Unbelievable. And March 22 for me, any chance that you’re the same?! And happy belated wishes to you as well. Don’t let it be just another day, do something special just for YOU. You really have to write a book about the farm. It would be so interesting to read, like Gladys Taber! Keep warm, stay safe, and do that something special.
