a few snippets of December...

What you get when the temps drop to 4, and the pumpkins are still on the steps...frozen TO the steps.  Oh well, how about if I add a little greenery around them? I can start a new trend for those of us who just didn't quite pack up Thanksgiving decorations a bit earlier!

This skinny tree has taken its usual place in the front window,

always filled with simple decorations.

And while I love retro colors and styles for my '63 camper, they don't really seem to fit with this old house. However; over the years I've been given so many beautiful handed-down aqua, pink, and muted pastel Christmas balls, I felt I had to use them.

This little tree was pretty much a give-away in an "As-Is" section of a nearby store. My daughter and I looked it over, didn't see a thing wrong, and so home with us it came. (I felt like Charlie Brown rescuing his little tree!)

It just fit in a corner of the dining-room between windows that needed a bit of holiday sparkle.

Saturday my son comes home from university for Christmas break (yay!), we'll pick out our tree on the way home, and on Monday he'll be having his wisdom teeth out. I know, what a way to spend Christmas vacation...but, these things get squeezed in when they can. Sigh, as the old proverb goes: "Needs must when the devil drives."  It was simply the best time to fit it in.

Christmas dinner will be Sunday, and the days following his surgery will be spent enjoying mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, pudding, applesauce, ice cream...you know the drill.

I hope you're all doing well...the count-down is on!

With that said...spend these days doing what makes you smile, what makes your heart happy, and as they say: You do You. Stay in your jammies. Stay up late, or turn in early. Get cozy or dress up and go dancing.

Are my packages wrapped?
No.

Are my cookies baked?
No.

Are my cards mailed?
No...they will be tomorrow; just think of them as Happy New Year's cards!

However, there IS a new furnace keeping things warm, firewood stacked by the kitchen door, and a snoozing dog by my side.

All is well.

Tomorrow I will put on my Christmas apron, turn up the music, bake cookies, and enjoy the days to come.

However you're spending these days, there's a magic to them that we're never too old to enjoy. May you find all that magic surrounding you.

  1. Hi Mary, wow 4 F, I had to convert it to Celcius (-15.5 C) before I realised how cold that is! No wonder your pumpkins froze to the steps. It has been around 28 C (82.4 F) here for the past couple of weeks and our raspberries and blueberries are fruiting and being gobbled up by the blackbirds!

Your tree looks lovely. I really like your vintage decorations 😊 I haven't managed to put up our Christmas tree this year, but I have decorated with old Christmas cards and Advent calendars to make the house look festive.

I am glad you will be keeping warm with a new furnace. Have fun with the rest of your Christmas preparations and have a wonderful Christmas! Hugs, Rose xxx

  2. Believe me, I never need an excuse to stay in my jammies!
Sending healing light to your son as he recovers from his surgery. He'll have lots of soft foods to enjoy while he heals.
Thank you for another year of wonderful posts and photographs. All good things to you in the New Year!

  4. Best wishes on the wisdom teeth extractions for your son. I had to have 3 pulled last year, so yes I know the drill. They left the 4th one in because it will never come out and is crooked. Best to leave well enough alone the doctor told me. Your trees are so festive. Love all of them even what you call your Charlie Brown one. I have seen lots of primitive homes with gourds and pumpkins for Christmas with sprigs of greens or inside a wreath. Just a perfect prim decoration. Janice

  5. Hello, my lovely friend! I was thinking about you yesterday! Christmas is beautiful in your home, and I feel as if I could pop on in for a cup of coffee right now! I love this post. I feel so much the same about it all. I will be thinking of you across the miles as we hunker down with our people for these cozy Christmas days. Hugs!

  7. Your little rescued skinny tree is beautiful. I'd like to think it's living it's very best life and smiling/shining as bright as it can to show how happy it is. Hoping your son's extractions go well and he heals quickly enough to enjoy the treats of the season. No cards written here, no cookies baked, no gifts wrapped (ummmm....barely any purchased) either. Try as I might, I'm not adjusting well to this new way of life. But I enjoy thinking of your "cozy"...a new furnace and the security it brings, and the comfort of the wood-burning fire and a snoozing dog. Yes, you are blessed.
