I’m glad to report we seem to be over Covid and all of its unpleasant little side effects - I can actually make it through the day without feeling like I need to take just one more nap (not that there’s anything wrong with naps - trust me, it’s a delightful way to spend part of a Sunday afternoon!)
We finally received some much-needed rain, everything has been so dry for weeks. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the combines turn over this much dust in the fields.
My daughter and I spied some terrific things at a couple of local antique stores, and slowly, but surely, the fall decorating has begun!
Would you believe me if I told you the pumpkin on top of the cupboard that says Happy Fall, it’s from last fall? I’ve found that the variety called Hot Chocolate will last at least two seasons – I don’t do anything special, I just take them to the basement, place them on wire baking racks, and leave them alone. Now, after a couple of seasons, they do dry up, but also, they become the best spooky-looking Halloween pumpkins!
If you’ve had a chance to read Robin’s blog over at The Cranky Crow, (do, it’s terrific!) you already know she shared her family history as it goes back to The Salem Witch Trials - a fascinating read that really intrigued me. I started doing some digging through my own family tree and was surprised to find that I also had ancestors that perished at that time…Elizabeth Howe and George Jacobs, Sr. in Salem, and George Jacobs, Jr. in an unknown location. History has always captivated me, and I’ll be doing a lot more reading about them over the winter.
Well, it’s time to get keep moving with the day - veggies and pumpkins to pick,
Hello, my dear friend! So glad you are on the flip side of Covid. It does take it out of you. I so love all you photos today, and the way they compliment the whole feel...or vibe, as my kids would say, of your space here. I always know when I click to come that I will feel calm, cozy and inspired. I love the photo with the book and the candle! I absolutely need to add some books to my decor. Thank you for the suggestion. I hope our October is long, colorful, cozy, and filled with all the goodies, my friend. Please know I think of you often and know we are living our lives in very much the same way.
ReplyDeleteBillie Jo, oh I couldn't agree more...I hope October is looooong, I'm trying to find ways to make it last. Right now it's still warm here, and it's been so dry, I think the leaves will simply turn brown without the usual spectacular colors. I'm so glad to have found your blog...you've given me ideas on how to keep priorities in line...home & family. Thank you...truly, it's heartwarming to know that across the miles we're both striving to do the same things.
DeleteHooray for feeling more yourself! I hope the following days bring you more and more strength.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pumpkins! Amazing that you found a variety that lasts two seasons.
Sweet Bailey must enjoy those long walks. Savor the season.
I hope you’re enjoying it too - I’m so grateful to be in a place where I can see the seasons change. We’ve got to figure out how to slow down time! Good grief, I saw Christmas trees and decorations across from Halloween skeletons at Lowe’s today - noooooo!
DeleteGlad you are over that nasty bug. The blow molds are getting quite expensive here. They look so wonderful all grouped together. It sure is pumpkin season and I am loving it. Wish it would rain though...just a bit. Janice
ReplyDeleteThanks Janice, me too...it really knocked me for a loop as the saying goes. We hadn't had rain in weeks, and finally got about 3 inches last week. I don't think the leaves will be pretty...I think everything will just be brown this year. Still in the 80's...I want sweater and sweat shirt weather!
DeleteSo glad you are feeling better! Looks like you had some good finds at the antique store. I am getting excited to decorate for fall! Those pumpkins are perfect!
ReplyDeleteOh Fall is my favorite time of year, Jackie...for some reason, October especially. It's been too warm though to feel fall-ish, but the Famer's Almanac predicts a cold and snowy winter - sounds perfect to me after the hot, hot summer we've had!
DeleteSo very happy to read that you're on the mend. Sometimes it lingers in the form of fatigue, etc. for far too long. We continue to be in a (strange-to-us) weather pattern here. Yesterday and today both near 80º. But oh, so dry. Fun, fun, goods at the antique stores. I love the display of the vaseline glass under the black light. Perfect for Spooking Season! Love all your pumpkins too. I'll have to see if I can find any of those Hot Chocolate ones. Here, usually, you have no idea what kind of pumpkin they are unless you really know your pumpkins. ;-) So sweet of you to give the shout-out. I'm so excited for you to explore your "connections." If you're like me, you start first exploring the whole era and what led up to 1692, then you learn all the "players"...and then you start hunting down anything and everything relating to your "pieces of the puzzle." I wish you luck and fulfillment. Funny about Elizabeth Howe... One of the samplers I stitched lists all those hanged but included someone who had not been hanged (but died in jail) and erroneously omitted Elizabeth. I notified the designer but she was not interested in correcting it. I corrected it on my version though. So, in a way, I feel a connection to her as well. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi Robin, thanks, so much better, but still a bit tired...I really need an energy boost to catch up. Yes, so horribly dry here as well...still in the 80's, that's not Fall, grrrr. You inspired me...I'll be doing some family history and reading this Winter...right now I'm jumping through several podcasts to learn more...down a rabbit hole as they say! Interesting that the designer didn't want to change the sampler, that's a shame...it should be correct. And oh my, Giles Corey...aged 81...what a horrible ending for him. What a tragedy for all. I'll do more reading on your blog as well, must catch up on the older posts. Ohh, and did I turn pea green with envy...did I read that right, your fridge is behind those beautiful wooden doors? I want to do that (and everyone thinks I'm crazy) - ha, and I alphabetize my spice jars, too...two peas in a pod!
DeleteIt's good to read that you're feeling much better, Mary. And I'm sure some fresh, autumn walks will be restorative.
ReplyDeleteDecorating for autumn is minimal here. But I'm planning on a visit to the pumpkin patch next weekend. Xx
