The haze of the days has made it difficult to tell sunrise,
from sunset.
The goal is to start early, then when it becomes unbearable, wait until evening to wrap up any outside work that needs doing. I tell you friends, I will not complain one jot or tittle about winter’s cold!
The volunteer pumpkin patch has pumpkins already…I had to give it quite a trim - it was taking over the rest of the garden and some of the yard!
Spent hay is being used to mulch the tomato plants - still patiently waiting for the first ones. To me, sun-warmed tomatoes and fresh sweet corn are the best parts of summer!
This sign at the Farmers’ Market made me smile!
We had a visitor the other morning-seeing deer this close to the house is rare.
Lately, I’ve been looking for a new cupboard to hold all of my scrapbooks…for years they’ve been tucked inside an old pie safe, and it was bursting at the seams. Nothing I came across had shelves deep enough (they need to be at least 14 inches.)
A couple of weeks ago I spied one online, so I took a chance, hopped in the car and made the 1-1/2 hour trip to check it out (talk about over the river and through the woods!)
It had a bad paint job (I know it looks like a great prim mustard, trust me it wasn’t) and it needed some TLC, but the price was just too good. It’s bigger than I wanted, but it will hold all my scrapbooks, future scrapbooks, and supplies!
Neither the seller nor I wanted to strip the paint off-it was just too big of a project to tackle right now (I know, I know) so it was coated in chalk paint.
Off came the modern, heavy-duty hinges which will be replaced by these:
And I found this keyhole cover in the barn – dated 1887 - it will go on the cupboard door.
I’m thrilled that I could add some pieces of this old house to the cupboard which will make it really special - I can hardly wait until it’s finished!
And yes, I’ll need to rent a U-Haul to get it home and I’ll be looking for some extra muscle to get it up the front steps and in place…I’ll share pictures once that adventure is over!
Hard to believe it’s August – time flies. Halloween items are already showing up in the stores - yikes!
Wherever you are, I hope you enjoy your weekend.
What a beautiful cabinet! I can’t wait to see what you do with it.
ReplyDeleteYes, the pumpkins are confused this year. I just harvested three from our pumpkin patch-all volunteers!
We are also enjoying a weekend in the 70’s. What a treat.
Enjoy this gift of a day!

Aww thanks - I wish it was already in place, I will be driving cautiously in the slow lane bringing it home! I’ll have to do my homework, I’m not sure if pumpkins should be picked this early in my neck of the woods or if they will grow more - I saw some orange ones mixed in with the white ones. And the squash I planted I fear has been crowded out! And you’re absolutely right-today was a gift, at least according to me, perfect weather ;)
DeleteThe pumpkins are ready when the nearest tendril to the stem turns brown. When they're ready, they're ready!
DeleteYou are a gem-thank you! I had no idea that’s how to tell, I’ll be checking today!
DeleteAhhh...the cool has found you later than us. We've been in the 70's for a week or so now...tonight, low in the 40's. Seriously. The forecast, though, shows that we'll be warming up again...to the high 80's by the latter part of the week. We are unbelievably hazy though - the smoke from the Canadian wildfires is awful. I had to run up to the lake last week and it is even worse up there. I LOVE your new cupboard! What a grand ol' dame! I lean toward the "purist" side, but must say that I agree whole-heartedly with you choice to paint...and that hardware!!! Perfect!! (But little confused...if you haven't gotten it yet, how did you manage to paint it? Or did the owner do it for you??) Love your volunteer pumpkins! Lucky you that they're white ones!! And hmmm....I'm tolerant of Halloween showing up in the stores at this point - it's less than 3 mos. away...but, here, they already have Christmas out. That is really disturbing to me. :-(
ReplyDeleteOh Robin - lows in the 40’s - that is my kind of weather. Especially in August, unbelievable. Sorry for the confusion, here’s the background - I don’t have Facebook, but when I look at Facebook marketplace, I can see a handful of items before it stops me I saw this, and she had also noted her hometown. So I did a Google search on antique shops in that town, checked out their Facebook pages (as many pictures as it would allow me) and unbelievably, I found the cupboard. She was going to paint it anyway, and had some different hardware she was going to put on, but was more than willing to put my hinges and keyhole cover on. While it didn’t bother me, I thought it gave the cupboard personality, it bothered the shopkeeper that the key hole was on the left, but the door latch was on the right - so she turned the door around - I haven’t seen it yet, fingers crossed. And believe me, I would love to have had it taken back to its original finish - sigh. Who knows, when I get it home, I may tinker with it-I’m just not into painted finishes that look too new. I may sand off some edges so it looks worn and apply a little stain on them. And Christmas-absolutely not! That really screams commercialism. We all know it’s coming, the date never changes (Aren’t I mean?)
ReplyDeleteA wonderful cabinet. I could tell it was old from the picture. Was told by another antique friend that using Easy Off oven cleaner will get rid of paint. I have not personally tried it myself, but she swears by it. Pumpkin patch is looking good. It is 58 here this morning with fog...and I have to go out and drive in it. UGH. Enjoy your cooler temps. Janice
ReplyDeleteSunrise or sunset. They're both beautiful photographs.
ReplyDeleteAnd - oh my days - the cupboard is gorgeous! And it will look even more so when decorated.
We're still in the throes of summer here. Definitely not thinking about Hallowe'en yet :) Xx
